About Somali language
There are no exact known numbers on how many people speak the Somali language, as there are large communities that have left Somalia and are living in different places outside the country. Some sources say there are more than seven million people that speak the Somali language in Somalia alone, and more than 12 million that do so in the rest of the world. Others say that the Somali population can be between 10 and 16 million worldwide.
The ethnic Somalis are the native Somali language speakers and are living in Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Yemen and Kenya. Many Somalis are scattered all over the world like the Middle East, Europe and North America, because a lot of them left the country after the civil war.
The Somali language belongs to a branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family that’s called East Cushitic. There are three main dialect groups within Somali language: Northern Somali, which has formed the basis for the Standard Somali; Benaadir or Coastal Somali; and Maay.
The dialects have radical differences between them and it’s possible that some Somali speakers can’t understand others who speak a different dialect.
