About Canadian French language
The French language, as a lot of people don’t know, is spoken in many different places far away from France and countries from European regions like Switzerland and Belgium, for example.
There are a lot of diverse populations in countries such as Canada and the United States that consider French as their mother tongue, which through time have been transformed to coincide with their own cultures - resulting to new varieties and dialects, different from the commonly known “Metropolitan French”, which is the French of France.
Canada, as a country, has two official languages: English and French. But French is only an official language in two of the Canadian provinces: Quebec, in which it is the official language, and New Brunswick, where it coexists as an official language together with English.
There are almost seven million people, 22% of the country’s population, who speak French in Canada. The biggest part of the Canadian Francophone population is located in the province of Quebec, where more than 80% of the people deemed French as their native language.
In the Quebecoise city of Montreal, French coexists with English, though French is the official language, and a lot of people speak both languages. The fusion created cultural jargons that French speakers from France find a bit difficult to understand.
However, even if French in Montreal is combined with English, the Canadian Francophone population is more conservative regarding the use of their language. They use literal terms for translating French into English, as compared to their French counterpart in Paris. Another difference is the accent. Francophone people recognize the Parisians and the Quebecoise at once, and, to a lesser extent, they can tell if someone speaks French from a small Francophone region.
Generally, French speaking people in Canada are regarded as Canadian French or, even, Quebec French, as those are the regions where the biggest part of the French Canadian speakers reside. You'll also discover that, apart from the well known Quebec French, there are other varieties such as Acadian French, Métis French, Brayon French, Newfoundland French, among others.
