About Khmer or Cambodian language
More than ten million people speak the Khmer or Cambodian language, which makes it the second most widely spoken of the Austroasiatic language family of Southeast Asia, after Vietnamese.
The Khmer has its own script, called Aksar Khmer. It is the official language of Cambodia and is spoken by the main ethnic group of the country, the Khmer people, which not only live in Cambodia, but also in close areas of Thailand and in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam.
The Khmer or Cambodian language has suffered transformations and has also transformed other languages like Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Cham, which are spoken in close regions and have also, as the Khmer, been highly influenced by Sanskrit and Pali.
The main dialects of the Khmer are the Battambang, the Phnom Penh, the Northern Khmer, the Khmer Krom or Southern Khmer and the Cardamom Khmer.
The Khmer people have different uses of their language, depending on the social status of the person to whom they are speaking.
